Universal tree structures in directed polymers and models of evolving populations.

By measuring or calculating coalescence times for several models of coalescence or evolution, with and without selection, we show that the ratios of these coalescence times become universal in the large size limit and we identify a few universality classes.

Automated Reconstruction of Evolving Curvilinear Tree Structures

Curvilinear networks are prevalent in nature and span many di↵erent scales, ranging from micron-scale neural structures in the brain to petameter-scale dark-matter arbors binding massive galaxy clusters. Reliably reconstructing them in an automated fashion is of great value in many di↵erent scientific domains. However, it remains an open Computer Vision problem. In this thesis we focus on autom...

The distribution of structures in evolving protein populations.

Proteins exhibit a nonuniform distribution of structures. A number of models have been advanced to explain this observation by considering the distribution of designabilities, that is, the fraction of all sequences that could successfully fold into any particular structure. It has been postulated that more designable structures should be more common, although the exact nature of this relationsh...

Directed Polymers on a Cayley Tree with Spatially Correlated Disorder

In this paper we consider directed walks on a tree with a fixed branching ratio K at a finite temperature T. We consider the case where each site (or link) is assigned a random energy uncorrelated in time, but correlated in the transverse direction i.e. within the shell. In this paper we take the transverse distance to be the hierarchical ultrametric distance, but other possibilities are discus...

Evolving Additive Tree Models for System Identification

To some extend, many complicated nonlinear maps are additive models of a number of linear and nonlinear terms. A single linear model or nonlinear model (i.e., a neural network model) has its limitation for approximating this class of maps. In this paper, a hybrid approach to evolve an additive tree model for a given problem is proposed. In this approach, tree-structure based evolution algorithm...
